Congressman Flake believes that most transportation decisions ought to occur at the state level. To that end, he has authored the Transportation Empowerment Act, which would greatly reduce the gas tax and return discretionary authority and fiscal responsibility for transportation programs to the states.
He is trying to achieve more transportation funding equality between donor states and donee states. Language championed by Congressman Flake to subtract Member’s earmarks from their state’s formula funding was included in the transportation bill that Congress approved in 2005.
Unfortunately, the transportation bill was so stuffed with pork projects that Congressman Flake was one of just 12 Members of Congress to vote against it.
